I am a third-year maths student at the University of Adelaide. While I was studying for my A-Levels in the UK I worked in the evenings as a private guitar tutor. As I saw my students develop and grow both in their technical ability and in their enthusiasm for the instrument, I began to find teaching really rewarding. I believe that taking control of your subject and learning to enjoy it is the key to success for any student, and throughout my teaching experience I have found this to hold true. Though mathematics as a subject is typically regarded as quite dry and formal, this doesn't have to be the case. My main interests besides maths are in music and literature, and I feel that this ability to relate to my students if necessary on a less academic level is a hugely valuable asset to me as a teacher. I believe that, like the arts, mathematics is a subject that can appeal to anyone, and can be approached in any number of different ways. The fact that maths is generally taught as a subject that can only appeal to very academically minded people is a real shame. If possible, I would like to change that and not only enable my students to 'make the grade', but also leave them with a deeper appreciation and a real love for the subject. Jacob
